Car 2653 was rebuilt to 8019; 2655 to 8016; 2664 to 8000.

2657 and 2652 on the rehab line at the Passaic Wharf shortly after the order came out to return the stored cars to wartime service on the new Jersey City lines.

The rehab was accomplished outdoors and the wet paint trapped dust and insects, but the pressure of time and the urgent service needs precluded the usual in-shop retrofits. Later, demand became so urgent that cars were simply cleaned up, and only platfforms were repainted pending development of a periodic maintenance and repainting program.

In operation on the new South Kearny line shortly after service began, 2657 leads lone auto along cobbled Jersey City street. (DE, 4-514, 54LW)
